Lady on Ipad looking at parenting apps

There's an app for everything, and that's certainly no less true when it comes to apps for new and expectant parents. Throughout my pregnancy I probably downloaded 10+ different apps just to track my growing bump. This for me, was part of the fun of it.

Since I have tried out so many different apps, I thought I'd give you my top 5. These are both great apps that will take you from being an expectant mum, to looking after your little one over the first few months.

Here are my top 5 apps for new and expectant parents!

The Bump App

The Bump is an American app brought to you by the same company who run the US wedding website "The Knot". This app is great if you want to know the size of fruit or vegetable your incubating baby most likely resembles at any given time. And who doesn't, right?

It was great fun to use. I would take a screenshot of the current baby fruit and whatsapp it to my husband pretty much every week for the first few exciting months of my pregnancy.

Each week you also get updates on the current development of your baby and the changes you can expect from your body.

The app also comes with various articles each week, such as tips for getting rid of morning sickness, and what to pack in your hospital bag.

There's also a Q&A section so you can ask questions to the Bump panel of experts, and editorial staff.

This is a nice fun app, which will last you throughout your whole pregnancy.

Smart Contraction Timer

When I was in labour, my husband's one job was to click the button on the contraction timer so I knew when I would be allowed to make my way to the hospital.

As it happens, he was completely rubbish at this one job. I ended up having to throw pillows at him while bouncing on my gym ball, to wake him up each time a contraction needed to be logged in the app. It seems he had better things to be doing - like napping!

When he was awake, we found the app really helpful to gauge the right time to call the hospital to tell them we would be leaving soon.

I'm sure being able to give the hospital exact timings made them take us more seriously. And when we did call, we were allowed to come straight in. Just in time really, as the Firebug arrived very quickly after we got there!

It's a really simple to use app, allowing you to keep track of your labour as it progresses by tapping a single button at the start and at the end of each contraction. The contraction timer analyses duration and frequency of all contractions and will notify you when it's time to go to the hospital.

Baby Buddy

I stumbled across this app when I was in triage of the labour ward at my hospital. After seeing the posters on the wall I decided to give it a go and found it pretty helpful during my pregnancy but it also goes up to the 6 months postpartum.

It's endorsed by the Department of Health and has been designed to help you give your baby the best start in life and support your health and wellbeing.

The app is mainly geared up towards younger mothers - a major part of the app seemed to be to decide what your little avatar should wear for some reason, but it does give lots of useful information and support for mothers-to-be and new mothers of any age.

You get regular "bite-sized" info customised to use yours and your baby's name, based on the age at your baby for that particular week. You can ask questions to experts, keep track of appointments, record questions as a prompt for your next midwife appointment etc.

It's a cute fun app, and it's free.

The Wonder Weeks

Now an app for after your baby is born.

The Wonder Weeks app is based on the international bestselling book, which aims to keep you informed about the various development and mental leaps and bounds your baby makes for the first 20 months.

The Wonder Weeks app helps new parents by providing a calendar showing when your little one will make a leap in his mental development, explaining what your baby can understand and what he can learn after each mental leap, as well as what your baby will be able to do after each leap and what you can do to help your baby.

As a lot of development can manifest as bad sleep, loss of appetite, crying and grumpiness, the app is a great reassurance to parents as it allows you to look up exactly why they might be struggling during this particular period.

I mainly use this app to check if a fussy period is normal, and to see when it will finally end! This allows me to count down the days till normality resumes... or the next leap starts and we do it all again!

Born to Move

Born to Move is an app brought to you by the NHS. It is intended to help parents with their newborn babies right up to pre-school age. It includes advice, tips and games that you can play with your child in order to help and support their development.

The app encourages daily active play and interaction to help with your baby's brain development from an early age. It gives tips to help your child develop intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically.

You can personalise the app with a photo of your own little one, and  lots of fun quizzes for you and games that you can play with your baby.

This was recommended to me by my health visitor, and I found it particularly useful when the Firebug was rejecting all things tummy-time. It had some good tips for how to make it more fun for us both.
